Thursday, April 13th, 2006: A letter from Gretchen to Dad.

Dear Dad,

I thought I would tell you about my day today [Thursday, April 13th, 2006]. As you remember, I woke up earlier than normal this morning - 6AM! I was ready to play. After you and mom played with me (you were both very sleepy, by the way), you gave me a bath. Mom is always insisting on this; she says I spit up all the time and that baths will keep me from getting a rash. After I napped, wearing my favorite pink flower robe, Mom and I went to the Ambulatory Care Center for my hand surgery to remove the little bleb from my pinky finger; you met up with us just before the 10 minute procedure. Everything went fine, of course. I am not a fussy baby! Once we got home, Mom held me a lot instead of putting me in my crib or carseat - I think she was worried about me and was happy that I was ok. This was interspersed with eating and poopy diapers, of course. After Mom held me a while, she decided I needed to wake up and play. I was ok with that for once. Usually I don't like to play with Mom - she is the food source - I typically just play with Dad. Mom had been very nice though, so I talked with her from my bouncer seat. I like to say ahhh and make some other interesting noises. I also followed Mom's face, and the face toy and musical panda from Grandma Alberta. This is called "tracking". Then, I guess Mom decided I needed some physical exercise, so she put me face-down on a blanket. Guess what, Dad? When I am in an outfit where my legs are free (in this case, a white onesie), I can just about crawl! Mom was so proud. She took lots of pictures, but by the time she thought of the video camera, I was mad and started screaming. You can look at the pictures though and see me inch across the blanket! After more eating and pooping, Mom tried to play with me again. This time she took some pictures of me in my bouncer seat with my first Easter basket from Grandma Alberta. Eventually, around 5:30, we made it to the park for our daily stroll. Then, we came back, I ate, and I slept on Mom while she called her Mom.

And that is about it Dad! I have the feeling Mom is about to wake me up again... She likes it much better when I am awake during the day instead of the night, for some reason.

Love,

Your beautiful, strong, independent daughter who can almost crawl,

Gretchen Marie

When she was born, she had a small skin tag on her pinky finger. Our pediatrician said that it is really common. Our pediatrician was trained to tie it off to cut off circulation and it would have just fallen off. However, there is a nerve that runs down the side of the finger that branched off into the skin tag. Therefore, we went to a pediatric surgeon so that he could remove the skin tag surgically and tuck the exposed nerve back under the skin (otherwise it could have been very sensitive later on). They just anesthetized the local area around the skin tag. From the time the doctor took her to the time he brought her back was only about 10 minutes.

We were a little worried because she had to have the local anesthetic (like the kind you get at the dentist), but, like Kris said, it was a very quick, routine procedure. She is all better now except for two tiny stitches.
